Rethinking Duverger’s Law: Predicting the Effective Number of Parties in Plurality and PR Systems
نویسنده
چکیده
Attempts to predict the number of political parties emerging in democracies have usually been based on one of two seemingly incompatible approaches: ( 1 ) the ‘institutional’ approach (e.g.. Duverger’s Law and Hypothesis) focuses o n the nature of the electoral system and also on the number of seats per district: (2) the ‘ideological’ approach stresses the nature and extent of social cleavages. This article attempts a synthesis by showing that election system and cleavage type interact to affect the number of parties. with the former factor determined in part by the latter. Our most striking finding. however. is that the effective number of parties tends to be obtained by adding ‘one’ to the number of issue dimensions. -Nithin this broader framework, Duverger’s Law emerges as a special case for polities with a single issue dimension. and Duverger’s Hypothesis is replaced by a much more quantitative prediction as to the effective number o f parties.

This is an analysis of strategic voting under qualified majority voting. متن کاملParty Formation and Policy Outcomes under Di ff erent Electoral Systems ∗
I introduce a simple model of representative democracy that allows for strategic parties, strategic candidates, strategic voters, and multiple districts. If the distribution of policy preferences is not too heterogeneous across and within districts, then the number of effective parties is larger under Proportional Representation than under Plurality Voting, confirming Duverger’s hypothesis, and...

First explaining the propositions and their cont...
متن کاملDuverger’s Law and the Size of the Indian Party System
Duverger’s law postulates that single-member plurality electoral systems lead to two-party systems. Existing scholarship regards India as an exception to this law at national level, but not at district level. This study tests the latter hypothesis through analysis of a comprehensive dataset covering Indian parliamentary elections in the period 1952–2004. The results show that a large number of ...
